  • Check wires and cords frequently and replace worn or damaged cords
  • Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI’s) in kitchens or bathrooms where water is present to prevent electric shocks
  • Don’t use cords under carpets or staple or nail to the wall
  • Cover outlets that aren’t in use with safety caps to protect children and pets
  • Don’t overload outlets
  • Keep water away from electrical appliances
  • When unplugging from an outlet, pull the plug and not the cord
  • Unplug appliances when not in use
  • If using space heaters, keep 3 feet away from bedding, carpet, furniture, or curtains
  • Use the correct wattage for lighting to prevent overheating
