- Check wires and cords frequently and replace worn or damaged cords
- Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI’s) in kitchens or bathrooms where water is present to prevent electric shocks
- Don’t use cords under carpets or staple or nail to the wall
- Cover outlets that aren’t in use with safety caps to protect children and pets
- Don’t overload outlets
- Keep water away from electrical appliances
- When unplugging from an outlet, pull the plug and not the cord
- Unplug appliances when not in use
- If using space heaters, keep 3 feet away from bedding, carpet, furniture, or curtains
- Use the correct wattage for lighting to prevent overheating
